East English Village Corridor Keepers
Cleaning Detroit one neighborhood at a time!
In July 2009, Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative (NDNI), in collaboration with the East English Village Association (EEVA) and Educational Data Systems, launched a new workforce volunteer program focused on the Harper Ave business corridor in EEV.
The "Corridor Keeper" team concept was modeled after work being done by the Eight Mile Boulevard Association in their district. Corridor Keepers focus on blight reduction and blight code issues. Understanding that cleanliness enhances safety, the activities - trash pickup, overgrown brush removal, alley cleanups - impact public spaces along a fourteen block stretch and serve to create a more attractive and safe environment for businesses and residents.
NDNI has been working with Harper Avenue businesses since to identify issues and address common goals in the district. It was determined that cleanliness should be the first goal for the group. While individual businesses focused on their own properties, a team was needed to address vacant properties and public spaces.
Educational Data Systems Incorporated designs and operates workforce development programs, helping people transition to jobs and build careers. The participants in the Corridor Keeper program receive services from the location on East Warren in EEV. Since community volunteer hours are required by their program and volunteers were needed for work along Harper, it was a win-win to dovetail the two needs. Participants reside in EEV and around the far-eastside of Detroit. The team works twice a week on various projects along the Harper corridor, with direction from EEVA Vice President, Terri Shaw, and NDNI Community Manager, Helen Broughton.
The program has been a success thanks to the cooperation of the businesses, the dedication of Terri Shaw, cooperative tool lending from the Warren Connor Development Coalition's Rebuilding Communities and the hard work of the Corridor Keeper team. Together we are making Harper Avenue a better place to do business.
