Home Repair and Weatherization - Classes and Grants Available Now

Over the last few years, through the support of Fifth Third Bank and others, NDNI has been able to assist qualified homeowners with minor home repairs in several of our target neighborhoods. Residents have responded enthusiastically to this assistance.

For Fall 2011 and Winter 2012, Home Maintenance and Weatherization assistance has been targeted to leverage the investment of our community partners such as the Detroit Land Bank (DLBA). The funds, provided by Detroit LISC, will also assist homeowners to make repairs required to come into compliance with city code and/or address code violations. Resident homeowners with current tax, mortgage and insurance status in properties adjacent to DLBA homes purchased in Boston Edison, East English Village and Morningside are eligible for a matching home repair grant up to $5000.

Other residents in these neighborhoods are invited to attend a Home Repair and Weatherization workshop series, lead by the experts at Warm Training Center. Participants who complete the series and meet the granting criteria are eligible for a one-time grant of up to $2000 for repairs such as exterior paint or siding, replacement windows, handicap accessibility features, gutters and roofs.

The current four-session series begins on January 17 and runs through January 27 and is held at the NDNI offices at 7301 Woodward, Detroit at the corner of East Grand Boulevard and Woodward. Registration is currently open for these Tuesday-Thursday sessions. Homeowners in East English Village, Morningside and Historic Boston Edison who complete the sessions may apply for home repair weatherization grants up to $2000 per household.

Clean Neighborhoods Program

NDNI Clean Neighborhoods Program incorporates clean up, blight removal and code education and, through community engagement, offers an environment for dialogue around neighborhood standards for city of Detroit residents. As neighborhood conditions improve and the cooperative relationship with the city's departments formed, we encourage citizen commitment and residential involvement in the maintenance and improvement of their quality of life.

Through partnership with Goodwill Industries and the City of Detroit Department of Public Works, NDNI deployed a Clean Neighborhoods team in five neighborhood areas during the summer of 2011. The team removed litter from commercial corridors and on entryway streets and around a school on a weekly basis. Through funding from PNC Bank we were able to place Clean Neighborhoods trash barrels in these areas and our team kept them serviced and disposed of trash at the city bulk waste sites.

"The Clean Neighborhoods Program and the Clean Team have done a great job on sprucing up the major commercial corridors of Woodward, Oakland and East Grand Boulevard," stated Lisa Johanon, Executive Director for Central Detroit Christian CDC. "I saw the before and after, and they were hardworkers who did a fantastic job. Thanks for making that happen." Education about municipal code around property maintenance and issues that relate to blight and neighborhood disturbance, the "rules" that our city charter mandates, is a key piece of our program.
